A local manufacturing company, Prefos Limited, is expanding its capacity to assemble street lighting systems to meet the needs of district, municipal and metropolitan assemblies.

The assembling plant at Adako Jachie near Kumasi is expected to produce 500 pieces of street lights a day, in addition to other accessories.

The firm currently assembles 200 components a day and also trains the youth in electric wiring.

Prefos Limited, which is a leading electrical, building construction and distribution firm, hopes to start full operations next month.

General Manager, Philomina Owusu-Ansah says the company will increase its current staff strength of about 150 to enable it meet full capacity.

Madam Owusu-Ansah says the company’s 20-year experience in supply and distribution of electrical products puts it in the best position for the task ahead.

“We are looking at probably by the middle of September. The machine can produce about 500 pieces of the street lights a day. In future, we are going to add more machines so that we employ more people so that we can increase the capacity”

According to Madam Owusu-Ansah, the company has plans to recycle old and out of use street lights.

“Prefos has been importing the component that we use for the assembling from outside.  We are trying to come up with recycling or fabrication machine to make use of the old ones that are spoilt so that we can use it for the assembling. And with this, it’s going to help the youth acquire knowledge in fabrication and get employment as well”.

Prefos has been undertaking street lighting projects in Kumasi, Upper Denkyira, Nkoranza, Offinso North and Asunafo district assemblies among others.

Twenty-five assembly members from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly have been touring the plant site to familiarize themselves with the work of the company.

Presiding member, Desmond Nii Addo Binney, has commended the company for the quality of services provided.

He rates high the quality of electrical components supplied and installed by the company in its street lighting programme.

“He is been doing well for AMA but what I will advise is that; all district assemblies within Ghana should also contact him[Prefos] so that their lighting problems within the district would be solved for them”

Some assembly members, impressed with the work of Prefos, are lobbying government to award nationwide street lighting project contracts to the company.
