Central Regional Director of Communication for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken a swipe at the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana accusing them of being hostile to the ruling party.
Bernard Allotey Jacobs said the Church's call on the Electoral Commission (EC) to halt its intention to create 45 additional constituencies is borne out of its affiliation to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“When NDC is in power, the Presby Church will wade into every issue but when it is about the NPP everything is good” he bemoaned.
The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, at press conference advised the Chairman of the EC, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, not to embark on any course that would plunge the country into chaos.
Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey said inasmuch as the law gives the EC the right to create constituencies, Dr. Afari Gyan must not allow such a decision to dent his enviable, unblemished record and achievements as Chairman of the Commission.
The controversial CI 73 creating the 45 constituencies which metamorphosed into CI 77 is in a limbo as the Majority in Parliament withdrew it following agitations by the Minority over the change in numbers.
The Majority is expected to lay a new CI on Wednesday and is confident that it would be passed to enable the EC create the new constituencies two months to the December polls.
But Allotey Jacobs on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, expressed disappointment about the conduct of the leadership of the Presby Church.
According to him, the leaders of the church only comment on national issues when the NDC is in power but are silent when the NPP engages in violent acts.
“The National leadership of the Church has become anti NDC, they oppose any initiative by government” he added.
Jacobs could not fathom why the Church did not communicate its reservations formally to the EC but made it public if it really has the interest of the nation at heart.
He said the motive for the creation of the additional 45 constituencies is to ensure equal distribution of the national cake to the citizenry and not to benefit NDC.
The Central Region Communication Director alleged that the NPP has offices in all the 45 constituencies and are equally prepared hence should stop throwing dust into the eyes of Ghanaians.
Allotey Jacobs was optimistic that the Majority would ensure the CI is passed to pave way for the creation of the constituencies.
