President Mills has submitted his NDC flagbearership nomination forms to party executives in Accra.
The form was presented on his behalf by spokesperson of ‘Get Atta Mills Endorsed’, (GAME) Barbara Serwaa Asamoah.
Speaking to Joy News, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah confirmed the submission, explaining that “on the surface of it, I think that the requirements have been met.”
He however stressed that executives were yet to “cross-check the veracity or authenticity of those who claim to have signed [the forms]. So yes they have met the requirement.”
He said the executives were going to go round the country to ascertain the information provided in the forms whiles they waited for other prospective candidates who would want to present their forms before the deadline.
He said after this is done, “we will invite [President Mills] and other candidates who file before 1st of June for vetting between 7th and 8th of June.”
Mr Asiedu-Nketiah said by 5:00pm on Wednesday, party executives will be in a position to know those who want to possibly contest the flagbearership slot of the party.
Responding to a question as to what will happen if by close of Wednesday, only one candidate (President Mills) has presented his nominations forms, Mr Asiedu-Nketsia explained that “if they don’t present their forms and we validate the forms of Prof. Mills, then we will proceed to do the vetting and then proceed to go to congress and do the voting,” adding, “the sole candidate must have fifty percent plus one,” approval by party delegates at the congress.
He therefore sounded a note of caution to those who think that if there is a sole candidate by June 1, then the contest ends, explaining that “[it] is not the end of the story. Our constitution requires that there must be an election and even if you have a sole candidate, that sole candidate must be endorsed by more than 50% of the delegates.
