A president and owner of a football club in Ghana has been arrested for alleged drug related offences.
Officials of the Narcotic Control Board confirmed the arrest to Joy News’ Sammy Darko in an interview but will not disclose the identity of the club president.
According to the NACOB boss, Akrasi Sarpong the unnamed suspect is a major financier of the drugs trade in the country.
The suspect, he said is helping with investigations.
The suspect was picked-up following ‘confessions’ by eleven employees of NACOB who have also been arrested for aiding and abetting the drugs trade in the country.
Akrasi Sarpong noted the arrests of its employees are part of the house cleaning exercise his outfit has been conducting.
He would not describe the arrests of its own employees as an indictment but rather a brave and purification exercise to rid the Board of miscreants.
Nine of the suspects are still in custody.
According to Sarpong, the employees have since 2007 been working with the drug dealers and for a fee.
“We had a clue that a personality here was involved with the drug traffickers. So we investigated and interrogated the clue and the results were startling. It looks like some of our people at the airport have been in league with the drug people since 2007 and they have been doing that for a fee and we have been able to unravel that,” he stated.
He said the eleven suspects include supervisors and junior officers and "we have been able to grab one of the financiers. that is very difficult to get"
"They (suspects) mentioned the kinpin. I would only say that he is a premier football club," he added.
Akrasi Sarpong said both the financier and the employees will be processed for court.
