Madam Janet Ackon, a public health nurse at the Reproductive and Child Health Unit of Tamale Sub-metro Hospital, has called on the government to establish more midwifery schools in the Northern Region.She said at present the region has only one midwifery school, which is impacting negatively on how deliveries are handled in the region.Madam Ackon was speaking at a soiree in honour of media personnel and other stakeholders in the promotion of health. It was organised by the Regional Chapter of the Coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in health in Tamale.The programme which was on the theme: “Sexual Reproductive health services and rights,” was aimed at creating a platform for the media, the coalition and health services providers to work together to bring about improvement in medical care especially reproductive health.She said most of the midwives at post are old and would soon go on retirement hence the need for adequate measures to be put in place to replace them.Madam Ackon said the country faces the danger of not meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Maternal Mortality.Mrs Ninnag Albertina; a public health nurse at the Savelugu/Nanton District said the nursing profession is in danger because most of the personnel are practicing out of other considerations and not to save lives.She said there is the need for intensive education to re-orient the mindset of parents and those entering the profession to know that nursing is of service and self sacrifice and not for personal gains.Mrs Catherine Mwine of the Ghana Health Service encouraged parents to discuss sexual matters with their children to help reduce immorality among the youth.She said lack of resources to carry out outreach programmes on adolescent health and funds to train health personnel are some the challenges impeding effective health delivery.Mr Moses Azabu, Regional Chairman of the Coalition said there is the need for adequate funding for NGOs to carry out their work.He appealed to donor partners and philanthropists to come to the assistance of the NGOs.
