A research has revealed that some Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), especially children, in the Sirigu Bolga and Chiana in the Upper East Region, and Nkwanta in the Volta Region are being discriminated against.
The research conducted by The Network of Journalists for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa-Ghana Chapter uncovered human rights violation, as they are not allowed to go to school.
They are at times used as traditional/spiritual sacrifices and are killed because of their deformities.
The President of the Network of Journalists for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa-Ghana Chapter, Seth Kwaku Addi, in an interview with Asempa News said these abominable practices and violation of the human rights of PWDs are happening on the quiets without the knowledge of human rights activists, the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) and the government.
“The visitation has identified some PWDs especially children with disabilities in the areas visited, and are facing discrimination and human rights violation. They are not allowed to go to school and at times use as traditional/spiritual sacrifices as they kill because of their deformities.
These abominable practices and violation of the human rights of PWDs, are happening on the quiets,” Mr. Addi explained
He said during their tour they were able to reach out to the community leaders, the victims, the general public and chiefs, adding that “Ghanaians will be shocked to hear that these gross human-rights abuses are happening quietly in the country when the network finally releases its finding to the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) in the middle of June 2010.”
The Executive Director of the Ghana Federation for the Disabled, Rita Kusi Kyeremaa, told Asempa News that the GFD is yet to receive the findings, but normally when they receive such finding, the Advocacy Committee of the GFD investigates and come out with the necessary solutions.
“We investigate and establish the truth and after that, we educate the community on the disability issues,” Ms. Kyeremaa said.
She explained that people do these things due to ignorance and after the education, they refrain from it.
Since the inception of the Network, it has been working closely with the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, PWDs and OPWDs in Ghana in the area of advocacy, research, publication and promotion of the rights of PWDs in Ghana and also ensures that disability issues and stories gain prominence and positive reportage in the local and international media.
