Former President Jerry Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu are living apart following the fire that ravaged their residence last Sunday. The former first couple on Valentine’s Day lost all their belongings at their Ridge residence.Joy News has however learnt that former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, is perching with her mother whilst her husband lives on his own somewhere in the capital that his aides are unwilling to disclose.Speaking for the first time since the incident on Tuesday, the former first lady expressed worry that invaluable memorabilia, collected over the years were destroyed in the fire.Nana Konadu told a delegation from Parliament that the most treasured gift Ghanaians can give them is a return of documents, pictures and other memorabilia in the public’s possession.“Indeed each morning makes me feel like…yeah I could have done a little more, may be, I should have rushed [into the building] and done a little more,” she told the Parliamentary delegation but, according to her, her mother would console her that she took the right decision of not entering the blaze. The delegation included the Speaker Joyce Bamford Addo, Majority Leader Alban Bagbin, Minority Leader Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu and the entire leadership of the House.“We have also come to thank God that you are safe,” the Speaker told the former first family. The former first couple have, after the loss, received an avalanche of sympathies from personalities including former President John Kufuor and his vice Alhaji Aliu Mahama. The Minority Leader expressed his sympathies with Mr Rawlings and his family but he said it’s time politicians learnt to interact regularly, not only during disasters, but during feasts as well.Meanwhile, the Majority Leader of Parliament Alban Bagbin has condemned the lack of maintenance culture in the country.According to him, the house of the former first family could have been saved if the state had been a little bit disciplined.Credit: Sammy Darko/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
