Former President Jerry John Rawlings is sponsoring boxers, Braimah 'Bukom Banku' Kamoko and Ayittey Powers, to the Brazil 2014 World Cup to support the Black Stars, it has been reported.
President Rawlings decided to sponsor the two boxers to Brazil for the World Cup as a reward for bringing back some excitement in boxing with their 'Judgement Night' bout a few weeks ago, Ghanasoccernet.com reported Thursday.
The ex-President was at ring side at the Accra Sports Stadium when Banku pummelled to win the bout by a unanimous points decision.
Banku reportedly confirmed the news in an interview with Accra-based Happy FM.
“JJ [the former President] bought our tickets for us to Brazil.
“I will be at the Black Stars camp to give them morale [sic] and support. We pray and hope that they will bring back the cup,” he was quoted as saying.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group G, alongside Germany, Portugal and the USA. They kick off their campaign against the USA on June 16.
