A Sunyani-based human rights media advocacy and entrepreneurial training organization, Global Media Foundation (GLOMeF), has said that historical observations on temperature and precipitation as well as recent extreme weather events in Ghana indicate that climate change is happening faster than previously thought, and that the women, men and children of Ghana will continue to experience the impacts of dramatic climate change in the future.
According to the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GLOMeF, Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the adverse effects of climate change and variability on the climate sensitive sectors of Ghana’s economy threaten the country’s continued development progress and its effort of attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“These risks, and the country’s vulnerability to climate change, according to the Climate Change campaigner underscores the need for the Government of Ghana not to address development challenges as business as usual, but must work to ensure that, going forward, climate change is fully integrated into economic, environmental and social decision making as well as receive the needed budget allocation,” he further explained.
Mr Ahenu made the observation during climate change community outreach programmes in some selected communities in the Ahafo region.
GLOMeF with a US$3,500 grant from the Global Green-Grant Fund is campaigning for environmental sustainability and to mitigate the impact of climate change in the Bono and Ahafo Regions.
The seven-month campaign seeks to sensitize women and young people in forest fringe communities on the contributory factors and effects of climate change in society.
Farmers and key stakeholders in the beneficiary communities, Afrisipa, Tanoso, New Dormaa, Fiapre, Kootokrom, Odumase, Abesim, and Baakoniaba, are being sensitised on the dangers of agro-chemicals and the need to engage in organic farming.
He commended Global Green-Grants Fund for its continuous funding support to grassroot and smaller environmental organisations which have no access to mainstream funding opportunities to protect the planet and the rights of people.
Mr Ahenu stated that Global Green-Grants Fund, since 1993, has been one of the leading organizations in the world supporting grassroots-led efforts to protect the planet and the rights of people.
“Global Green-Grants Fund is different from other international organizations because it does not try to dictate an agenda from afar.
Instead, it trusts local people to advance solutions and strategies that will best fit their needs, providing them the resources to make their ideas a reality so they deserve our commendation,” he said.
