Registration officials at some polling centers in Accra are appealing for an intensive public education on the on-going biometric voter registration exercise to safeguard the process.The appeal comes on the hills of an ongoing evaluation of the first phase of the nationwide exercise.“Some people couldn’t even spell their own names, while others had totally forgotten the name of their hometowns. When this happen, it slows down the process and when you tell him or her to leave to go get the right information, they get offended, claiming they had been in a queue for a long time and were not prepared to go without registering. Sometimes this even ends in an argument with registration officers” lamented a Registration officer Joe Addo-Tuffour at the St. Theresa’s Preparatory School Center B.Meanwhile, over 2000 persons had already registered at the center as at Sunday with another 138 more registering before midday when Joy News TV reporter Eric Curtis Howard visited.Other centers including the Accra Newtown Experimental School, the Alajo Presby Primary 1, and the Kpehe Methodist Church had all registered 1435, 1232 and 1,066 persons as at Saturday when the exercise begun.Registration officials also cited the attitude of persons during the registration exercise as some reasons for the seemingly slow nature of the process.“Here at this polling center, we always have to separate two persons or more likely to engage in argument as to who arrived at the center first. This argument sometimes leads to fist cuffs which eventually delay the registration process” Isaac Tawiah, the registration officer of the Accra Newtown Experimental School explained.Other registration officials the news team spoke to however indicated the initial challenges such as the late arrival of registration materials which characterized the first three days of the registration exercise had been resolved adding that the process was going on very smoothly.They were very confident, the start of the second phase of the exercise will not be met with any technical hitches as they were now more familiar with the materialsThe Biometric registration exercise began on March 24 across the country and is expected to generate a register for the December general elections.
