Residents of the Volta Regional town of Alavanyo are said to be fleeing the town, following Monday’s shooting incident which led to the killing of two persons, in what is believed to be linked to a prolonged land dispute between the Town and Nkonya.
Two others sustained gun wounds in the latest violence.
The latest development has compelled the Regional Security Council to tighten security in the town.
But the Assemblyman for Alavanyo-Kpeme electoral Area, Elemawusi Michael told Joy News the security deployment has mainly been in the town of Nkonya, insisting there was no visible police presence in the area.
He said the town is “virtually looking empty”, as almost everybody including health workers and teachers are fleeing for their lives.
Regional Minister Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo says “the situation is getting out of hands” and hints of plans to invite the leaders of the two communities to Accra to dialogue.
“If they refuse to listen or give respect to authorities then we will be forced to take another action,” Nii Afotey stated.
Meanwhile, conflict resolution expert and Executive Director for West Africa Network for Peace and Development (WANEP), Emmanuel Bombande has blamed the latest case of violence on the lack of commitment on the part of regional authorities to restore lasting peace.
Mr. Bombande noted, the conflict can only be resolved if the issues of mistrust and the lack of commitment by both factions are not addressed.
According to him, deploying security to the area to protect life and property is not the panacea to the conflict.
“The issue is more of persuasion that issuing ultimatum,” he cautioned.
