As part of its commitment to improving health care delivery in Ghana, the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects SEHP has donated  neurosurgical equipment  to the neurosurgical department of Ridge Hospital. The donation was in support from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, through the Turkish Embassy in Accra.

The presentation, which was done jointly by second Lady Samira Bawumia and the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, Nesrin Bayazit was valued at GH¢200,000 and was to support surgical operations conducted by doctors at the unit.

After the presentation, Samira Bawumia visited accident victims on admission to wish them well.

However it was revealed that the greater number of daily accident victims  the unit receives were commercial motor riders who always sustain high degrees of injuries.

According to the surgeon in charge of the unit Dr Emmanuel Voggdo about 90 percent of  cases recorded every day were motor riders.

He said the worrying part of it is that most of them sustained severe head injuries and broken legs.

He explained that families of some of the victims abandoned them and they  become burden on the hospital since its about human life they cannot turn them away.

Dr Vogdo wants commercial motor riding in Ghana to be abolished or for the law to be strictly enforced.

After her tour of the unit Madam Bawumia cautioned motor riders to adhere to road safety regulations to avoid accidents, adding that observing road safety is key to road accident prevention. She therefore advised them to wear helmets any time they ride.

The Second Lady appealed to the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service to intensify their checks on the road since the rate of motor bike-related accidents have become alarming.

Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, Nesrin Bayazit,  said health is one of the most essential areas in public service and there is the need to work to improve public hospitals.

She said Turkish Corporation and Coordinating Agency and Samira Bawumia Foundation has alredy started fruitful partnerships currently underway, which will unveil projects that will be more beneficial to Ghanaians.
