Some beneficiary schools in the cities will soon be weaned off the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP)to make way for more schools in deprived communities.
Officials of the programme say the current situation where schools in urban centres enjoy at the expense of less endowed ones defeats the objectives of the programme.
Public Relations Officer of the GSFP, Alfa Siba , has told Nhyira FM the move is meant to re-target the programme following concerns from donors over disparities in the distribution of schools.
The School Feeding Programme was introduced by the NPP administration in 2005 to provide one hot meal daily for pupils in deprived areas with low enrollment and high dropout rates.
Having been piloted in 10 schools nationwide, the programme currently operates in 1,984 schools with a total of 652,624 children on board.
Though the three northern regions remain the most poor in the country, Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions lead the pack in the number of beneficiaries, a situation officials describe as 'implementation challenge'.
According to Mr. Siba, some pupils in some beneficiary schools in the cities do not eat food served by the programme because ‘they consider what they are served at home richer’.
He said officials of the GSFP has identified the challenges and will soon address them as part of efforts to sustain the programme.
There are plans to increase beneficiaries to one million and forty thousand pupils next academic year for which the government has released GHS50 million.
Mr. Siba said the expansion will only come with redistribution of schools, adding, officials will ensure laid down procedures are followed in the process.
