Vivo Energy Ghana Limited, the 2015 Oil Marketing Company of the Year that markets Shell products, has presented bursary awards to the winners of the Vivo Energy Bonanza School Challenge.

The teams that won first place in their classes were presented with a bursary of GHS400, stationery and Daffodils Game Products, while those who won second place were presented with a bursary of GHS300, stationery and Daffodils Game Products.

The competition, which was designed as an entertaining way to promote the learning of mathematics among students through the Bonanza Card game, was organised by Daffodils Games and Publishing Limited with partnering sponsorship from Vivo Energy Ghana. Vivo Energy Ghana financed the bursaries.

Commenting on the sponsorship Mrs Shirley Tony Kum, Corporate Communications Manager for Vivo Energy Ghana said: “It was great to see how excited the pupils were during this pilot run of the Bonanza School Challenge. We plan to eventually roll it out to other basic schools and with it, a new-found love for mathematics among pupils. We at Vivo Energy Ghana are extremely proud to have sponsored this.”

Elizabeth Chocho Kasim, Headmistress of Mamprobi Sempe 5 – one of the prize winning schools - shared how the games had benefited her pupils: “Gone are the days where pupils run away from class because the maths teacher would have a mental drill in the morning. The teachers have now adopted the game as morning ‘tea’ for the pupils, who find it both fun but also educational,” she said.

According to the Human Resource and Administrative Manager of Daffodils Games and Publishing Limited, Mrs Marlene Tonyigah, mathematics is often thought of as a difficult subject, so the competition was meant to encourage basic schools to approach mathematics with fun and a positive attitude.

The prize winners were from the following basic schools in the Greater Accra region: Mamprobi Sempe 5 (first prize JHS 2, second prize Class 4 and second prize Class 5); Bishop Mixed Junior High (first prize JHS 1 and second prize JHS 2); Kwashieman 1 Basic (first prize Class 4); Accra Sempe 1 (first prize Class 5); Salvation Army ‘B’ (first prize Class 6); Bishop Girls’ (second prize Class 6) and Odorkor 1 Junior High School (second prize JHS 1).

The other schools that participated were Amugi Boundary Road, Kwashieman 2 Basic and Salvation Army ‘A’.
