Scenes of children crowding around a mono desk or sitting on the bare floor, jerrycans and on dwarf walls to write are a commonplace in schools in rural Ghana.
Nonetheless, getting pupils to appreciate simple technology known as the Montosua Plastic Bottle Chair Project, and apply it to address their own furniture challenges can be exciting and fulfilling.
That’s an innovation an educationist in the Ashanti Region is promoting, using plastic bottles to build chairs for school and for domestic use.

Outgoing District Education Director for Sekyere South District, Jocelyn Asante-Boamah, is spearheading the project.
What has become a stubborn environmental pollutant, plastic bottle, is however being used to address this widespread challenge, thanks to the ingenuity of a leader.
The process involves cutting off the upper quarter of one bottle and placing it on top of a whole one to form a bottom-bottom piece.
With the help of teachers, the pieces are arranged and bound together with a cellotape.
The base is formed first, followed by the arm rest and the back.
They again bind them with cellotape to get a firm frame.
Finally, they cover and decorate them with fabric to give it a pleasant look.
Madam Asante-Boamah, says it is meant to encourage creativity in children while solving environmental problems.
“When the child acquires the skill of creativity they can go into many areas. With this, government will be supported to keep the environment clean,” she said.
She is hopeful the smiles on the faces of these young ones would spread to other parts of the country.
Certainly, initiatives such as the Montosua Plastic Bottle Chair Project will force no child out of school just because they have no chair to sit on.
