A senior citizen, Lucy Ennin who was the Brong Ahafo Member of Parliament under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s regime, has called on the government to institute policies that will promote the welfare of the working populace especially during retirement.
She told ASEMPA TODAY that, the divestiture of various state companies had compounded the situation of the already burdened poor workers due to lack of proper laid-down retirement packages.
Mrs. Lucy Ennin who was contributing to a discussion on the maintenance of our senior citizens noted that during the first republic under Dr. Nkrumah, more industries were established but now, most of them have either been collapsed or divested.
According to Mrs. Ennin, because the private sector employs more people than the state, little attention has been granted the general welfare of workers, since most employers are of the view that “there are even more people on their waiting list”.
She has therefore called on the government to consider establishing more industries to cater for the improvement of the economy and employment of the citizenry.
