Several shops belonging artisans at Green Gate near the Trust Towers in Asylum Down, Accra, have been demolished in a tussle over the parcel of land.
The police stormed the area Wednesday morning to supervise the demolishing exercise after that artisans – made up of mechanics and traders – were reportedly served with notice of eviction.
Several structures on the said land were demolished as the artisans were seen trying their best to move their cars and also salvage leftovers.
Some of the affected persons who spoke to Myjoyonline.com were furious at the situation saying, they were only informed of the eviction about a month ago.
According to them, a man by name 'Abodwese' approached them and demanded GH¢50 from each of them, assuring them of their stay there for the next six months before they are evicted.
A court order – alleged by the artisans to have been posted Tuesday night - sighted by Myjoyonline.com and dated March 28, 2012 stated that occupants on the land, Mr. Gershong of Mamprobi, Accra should vacate the land after a case was filed against them.
Serv-U-Farms Limited of Kaneshie Industrial Area, Accra - the plaintiff - filed the suit at the Circuit Court on March 19, 2013 but the supposed order was dated March 28, 2012.
Interestingly journalists who were at the scene, including this reporter, were harassed by police personnel. The police vehemently foiled every attempt by the journalists to cover the demolishing exercise.
