St Louis Senior High School and Prempeh College reigned supreme at the 2024 Ashanti Region Schools & Colleges Super-Zonal Athletics Championships which ended last Friday at the Baba Yara Stadium.
This year’s event, the most attended in the post-COVID era, had a huge boost from W Sports Consult who provided medals and other athletics accoutrements including a landing mat.
St Louis was ruthless over the two-day event, thanks to star-girl sprinter Aisha Ibrahim, to amass 150 ½ points.

The Form 3 student bid goodbye to High School sports by winning six gold medals in 100m, 200m, 1000m medley, 4x400m and 4x200; and a silver in 4x100m.
They were also successful in some field events with Mariam Yussif winning the Shot Put [11.12m] and Discuss [31.26m] events.

This feat is their second in competition history since 2006. T.I Ahmadiyya, 114pts; Kumasi Anglican, 95pts; Osei Kyeretwie, 94pts; Yaa Asantewaa Girls’, 79.50pts; closed out the top five.
For Prempeh, it was an overall performance- winning the sprint and distance events - which saw them amass 142 points.

They won the 4x400m, 4x100m, and took both first and second places in Javelin.
In addition, they finished second in 4x200m, 200m and 800m as well as finishing third in the 1500m race.
The Top five in the Boys category had Opoku Ware School, 123pts; T.I Ahmadiyya, 91.5pts; Osei Kyeretwie, 75pts; Antoa SHS, 35pts.
Broken/Equaled Records:
Dennis Appiah of OWASS set two competition records. His 13.71s in the 110m Hurdles final rewrote the 13.84s set by Seidu Baba of Jachie Pramso in 2018.

He again stormed to a record-breaking 52.70s in the 400m Hurdles. This replaces the 52.94s set in 2018 by T.I Ahmadiyya’s Evans Donkor.
Another OWASS boy, Prince Adu Gyasi, is the record holder in the High Jump after clearing 2.06m to scatter the 2.03m set by Prempeh College’s Kelvin Adu in 2019.
Antoa Senior High’s Evans Gyan overcame adversity to equal the Pole Vault record set by Ali Yahaya of T.I Ahmadiyya in in 2018.

Gyan broke his vaulting pole during the eliminators but stayed focused to clear a height of 3.60m.
Last year [2023], T. I Ahmadiyya won the Boys 4x200m race with a record-setting 1.27:54s and the relay team defended their title with another competition record time of 1.27:17s.
