Electricity consumers are to brace for less power supply as the country’s power distributors say they have been forced to shed more load.

The Electricity Company of Ghana has been shedding load since last year due to the power crisis facing the country.

Joy News sources at the ECG indicate that the power producers shed six hundred megawatts of power yesterday instead of the usual three hundred to four hundred megawatts of power.

But GRIDCo admitted it is currently shedding four hundred and twenty megawatts of power due to the shortfall in gas supply from Nigeria.

However, Frank Okyere, Systems Control Manager at GRIDCo, told Joy News supply may improve if the expected power from the Aboadze Thermal plants come on stream today.

He attributed the recurring shortfall in power supply to growth in demand, mandatory inspection and maintenance of plants, and inadequate supply of natural gas from Nigeria.

“This week we have had very low gas supply from Nigeria therefore generating plants especially in Tema that run on gas they have not had enough gas to run,” he explained the current shortage.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Gas Company says it will Commission the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant by the end of January.

This is expected to give the VRA additional 120 million standard cubic feet of lean gas per day to boost power production.
