The Coalition of Concerned Teachers has suspended its strike over service conditions and other grievances.The leadership however says members will resort to similar action in future if it becomes necessary, because according to them it is the only language government understands.The coalition announced suspension of the four-day old action after what it describes as productive tripartite meeting with relevant authorities.They include Labour Commission, Fair Wages and Salary Commission and the Ministry of Education.Communications Director, Awudu Ali, is concerned government has over the years paid little or no attention to dialogue proposals from workers to resolve industrial disputes.Members of the coalition downed their tools on Monday to back demands for improved service conditions, restoration of reduced salaries and resumption of negotiation on market premium.Their action rendered many classrooms dormant with the Asem Boys M/A School temporarily closed as academic work was disrupted in several other schools. Mr. Ali says government should be more responsive and prompt in addressing workers'concerns.“It is not only teachers, look at other public sector workers. Upon the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure, almost all other sectors have had what they want through strike. It is unfortunate”, he said.According to him, government has over the years turned blind eye to concerns of workers who approach through dialogue to resolve their concerns.“If you want to dialogue with government, you send letters upon letters, they would not mind you at all but as soon as you resort to strike, they come in and start solving issues”.The coalition instructs members to return to the classroom pending negotiations on their grievances with the Labour Commission, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and Ministry of Education.
