The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has formally handed over the Race Course site in Kumasi to the Kenbert Group of South Africa for work to commence on the Sun City project. About 10,000 traders were moved from the area about six months ago to pave way for the commencement of the project, which is expected to transform Kumasi and provide jobs for the people. The delay in the commencement of the project was becoming a source of concern to the people with all manner of rumours making the rounds about the project. The rumour was that the project could not go on because of the death of former Libyan leader Muammar Qathafi who was alleged to be the brain behind the project. Another was that armed robbers had taken over the land and were terrorising people at night. Officials denied media reports that the former Libyan leader was the brain behind the project. They also denied reports in a section of the media that armed robbers had taken over the site. During a visit to the place by a group of journalists, officials indicated that all was set for work to fully commence. Kenbert Group of South Africa and a team of local and international partners are undertaking the project. The multi-million cedi project is expected to transform Kumasi and create employment opportunities for the youth, boost tourism and attract international investment to the Ashanti Region. When completed, the Sun City project would comprise a multi-purpose world class facility of a shopping mall, an entertainment park and 'fitness centre, a five-star fully equipped international clinic with an ambulance station and a helicopter pad. Besides, it would have doctors' bungalows and an ancillary staff quarters, a five-star hotel, 240 semi-detached executive houses within eight gated-communities with each community having its own swimming pool and tennis court. It is the single biggest investment so far secured by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in his quest to boost the investment drive of the region. It came out that the entire 100-acres had been fenced and tight security provided to prevent wee smokers and other criminals from using the project site. Mr Osei Bonsu, the Managing Director of Bonfirm Co. Ltd, the firm that undertook the fencing exercise, said four security gates had been erected with professional personnel from UK Stars Security Limited guarding them. He said it would be highly difficult for any criminal to use the place due to the tight security.
