The Tshwane derby ended in a 1-1 draw on Monday as the league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns failed to take advantage of a ten-man SuperSport United.
Both teams began the match by playing to their strengths. SuperSport playing the ball in a more direct fashion, with long balls being played to the captain Mame Niang, while Sundowns looked to play build-up football, with sleek movement down the middle of the park.
Matsatsantsa had the first clear chance of the game when Niang was put through but failed to capitalize.
Sundowns would go on to dictate play and created a number of chances, but nothing of substance that the likes of Khama Billiat and Cuthbert Malajila could lay their boots on.
In the 21st minute, United took the lead when a well worked free-kick found the left boot of left-back Sibusiso Khumalo, who fired in a thunderous strike from 30 yards out past a stunned Kennedy Mweene.
The table-toppers brought on Teko Modise at the start of the second half as they went in search of a quick equalizer.
And, in the 46th minute they were afforded a chance to do so following a foul on Katlego Mashego just outside United's 18-yard area. Mashego took the kick and successfully curled the ball around the United wall to beat a seemingly poorly positioned Rowan Fernandez and give Sundowns the deserved equalizer.
The match, in true derby fashion, went on to be a tense affair and play was restricted with a number of tackles flying in. And in the 82nd minute SuperSport were reduced to ten men when winger Sameegh Doutie received his second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Teko Modise which was followed by a red.
Bafana Ba Style went in search of the victory and had the upper hand on the left wing but could not make inroads as SuperSport managed to see out the remainder of the match and hold on for a share of the spoils.
In the end, both coaches felt that either of their sides could've taken maximum points, with Calvin Johnson claiming that his side had better chances to score but failed to convert, while Pitso Mosimane felt that the officiating may have cost his side, citing a possible foul by Fernandez on Malajila in the penalty box.
The result lifts the home side to fifth in the PSL table while Downs remain in top spot.
