One of the assistant referees who officiated the controversial Glo Premier League match day 7 game between BA Stars and New Edubiase in Berekum on Sunday, Referee Okuampa, has admitted that he was assaulted by irate supporters of BA Stars.
Referee Okuampa who recounted the ordeal he suffered at the hands of supporters said his ear was screwed with a car key by an angry fan who sermonized about how the team is very important to them.
Mr. Okuampa was speaking on Asempa Fm in Accra in relation to the purported attack on the match officials during the game. He said the attack occurred because supporters of BA Stars wanted to use all available tactics to win as they were down by a goal.
He advised football fans to learn the rules of the game and be graceful in defeat, even at home.
Mr. Okuampa indicated that he has been to the hospital for treatment and his condition is stable. He added that if he is asked to officiate another match at the same venue, he will gladly do so as he sees it as an occupational hazard in the performance of his duties.
Mr. Okuampa believes referees are not infallible and sometimes they falter but these are not enough grounds for any attacks on their lives.
He expects security to be beefed up at all locations to prevent any form of crowd violence in the future.
In a related development, the management of BA Stars has registered the clubs disappointment at the reaction of the supporters during the match. They have therefore rendered an unqualified apology to the referees committee for the mishap.
