There is growing anger and intense confusion mounting between the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly and the artisans operating at Tanokrom-Kokompe near the Jubilee Park at Takoradi.
The over 2000 artisans, who operate from Tanokrom in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis say they will resist any attempts by city officials to evict them.
Meanwhile, the assembly says the artisans, who are occupying about 2000 acres of land space are squatters and that they should move from their present place by the end of January to a new site allocated to them.
As part of its new development plan, the Metropolitan Assembly has re-zoned the area for the construction of a multimillion dollar shopping mall, but the artisans say the new site allocated to them has not been properly developed.
According to them, moving to the new site will only kill their business and prevent hundreds of the youth from being employed.
Speaking to Joy News' Kwaku Owusu Peprah, who visited the new site at Kansarodo, a suburb of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western region, the Secretary of the Garages Association in Tanokrom, Kokompe noted that due to the hilly nature of the new site, it will be impossible for the artisans to work effectively from there.
According to Samuel Nkrumah, the new site experiences flooding with the constructed electricity transformer too small to cater for their operations.
Additionally, the Secretary of the Garages Association indicated that a-twenty-seater toilet facility constructed at the new site is not enough to cater for artisans of about 2000 with only one borehole meant for the facility.
He also complained about the lack of a police post at the new site, stressing that due to a distance of about 14km from the new site to the Takoradi township, it is impossible for people to engage in frequent and effective business with the artisans.
