Teachers at the Ghana National College in Cape Coast have declared an indefinite sit-down strike. They are protesting against the continued performance of certain administrative functions by the head master of the school who was suspended last month. Spokesperson for the Teachers, Wisdom Afedo told Joy News they will not return to the classroom until certain anomalies regarding the suspended headmaster of the school are corrected. He claimed that on October 7, 2010, the headmaster of the school was directed to step aside and handover to the Metro Director of Education for Cape Coast. “But as of 22nd November, we discovered that he was still signing food ration requisition books, fuel coupons for vehicles in the college and then signing logbooks of vehicles as well as inspects and approves college cheques before they are sent to the Metro Director to sign.” Mr Afedo said the headmaster had restricted the use of the only minibus of the college to himself making it difficult for sick students to be conveyed to the hospital. “We have refused to be remotely controlled from the bedroom of a headmaster who has a motion of no confidence around his neck,” he asserted. The teachers also have a beef with the Metro Director of Education. They say he is not performing his functions as an acting headmaster of the school. Efforts to reach the Regional Director of Education for comment proved futile. Source: Joy News/Ghana
