Easter Monday, one of the holidays commemorating the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, was marred by tragedies which claimed ten lives across the La, Kokrobite, Bola beaches in Accra and Nyanyanyo Beach in the Central Region.The deceased were among the many holidaymakers who thronged the above-mentioned beaches on Monday.While some of them died through a stampede at the La Beach, others drowned in the sea, with some of the bodies yet to be recovered.Those who died through the stampede at the La Beach have been identified as Lydia Gizoh, 30, Mary Gimatey, 12 and Benjamin Gimatey, 17 both pupils of Achimota JHS.Two others- a petty trader, Amina Mussa, 22, and Achere Cudjoe, 21- drowned at the Borla Beach in Accra, not far from the Independence Square.Three yet to be identified persons drowned at the Kokrobite beach and two more at the Nyanyano Beach in the Central Region.The Nyanyano victims were said to be lover who dived into the sea swimming but were subsequently carried away around 3:00pm. Within a short period, the body of the male was washed ashore leaving the lady in the sea. As at Tuesday afternoon, the missing body of the lady was yet to be retrieved.Two unidentified persons were treated and discharged at the La General Hospital while Barbara Amoah, 18, was recuperating at the same health facility as at press time.The remains of the three who died at the La Beach have been deposited at the La Hospital, awaiting transfer to the Police Hospital for autopsy, while those who died at the 'Borl' Beach are in the Ridge Hospital morgue.Eyewitnesses attributed the stampede to holiday makers rushing to the exit of the beach when the weather turned cloudy, signaling a downpour. With the security personnel at the exit point allegedly shutting the place, a stampede resulted.The Commander of the La District Police Station, Superintendent Yao Tettegah, disputed the foregone, explaining that all was calm at the beach until at about 6:00pm when it started to drizzle.This, he added, was followed by a sudden surge of a crowd towards the exit to perhaps catch a bus before the downpour. It was a hectic assignment for the police, supported by the military and National Security personnel when they tried to no avail to control the dangerous surge, he said.The La Police rescued some 12 children who they kept in their custody until yesterday, when their parents came for them.At 11:15am when DAILY GUIDE was leaving the premises of the La Police, one of the rescued children, a six-year-old boy who gave his name as Kodjo, a resident of Achimota and a pupil of Redeem Primary School, was still in the custody of the police, as he was yet to be recovered by his parents.Superintendent Yao Tettegah called on the missing boy's parents to contact his outfit to identify the boy and take their son home.Source: Daily Guide
