Three Ga chiefs were on Thursday elevated to paramountcy status at a colourful ceremony at Dodowa.
They are Nii Kojo Ababio V, James Town Mantse, Nii Kpobi Tettey Tsuru III, La Mantse, and King Odaifio Welentsi III, Nungua Mantse.
The President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Nene Abram Kaku Akuaku II, performed the induction ceremony, which was supervised by the President of the National House of Chiefs, Wulugu-Naa, Nila Prof. John S. Nabila, and witnessed by other chiefs from Ga-Dangme, the Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashietey, and District Chief Executives.
Naa Prof. Nabila commended the subcommittees of the National House of Chiefs for amicably resolving the issues surrounding the paramountcies of Tema, Teshie, Nungua, Osu, La, and James Town, as a result of which separate traditional councils would be established for them, while the six divisions of Ga Mashie, Asere, Sempe, Gbese, Otublohum, Abola and Akumadze would remain part of the Ga Traditional Council.
Cautioned that the elevation was not for the benefit of the individual chiefs, but their stools and urged them to work towards bringing peace into the chieftaincy institution in the region.
“The chiefs must also endeavour to be humble and serve the interest of their people”, he exhorted.
Nii Armah Ashietey reiterated the commitment of the government to put in place the necessary legal instruments, to enable the newly established councils to function effectively.
He appealed to factions in the numerous chieftaincy disputes to call a truce and let peace prevail in the region.
“Violence, greed, and irresponsible behaviour can no longer be the way of life for our people,” he stressed.
The minister appealed to the litigants to stop putting money into the pockets of lawyers and instead use the wealth to help promote development in the Ga state.
“My humble appeal to you is to collectively close this dark chapter in our history; we can no longer continue degrading and humiliating ourselves during festive occasions,” he emphasised.
Nii Ashietey urged them to rededicate themselves to the new chapter opened in the region and avoid personal vendetta so as to create a society which would meet the aspirations of the people.
A member of the Council of State, Eddie Annan, urged the traditional council to, as a matter of urgency, resolve the issue surrounding the Ga State paramountcy status as well as those of 9su and Teshie.
That, he explained was the only means to bring total peace to the Ga State.
“We are sitting near the seat of government but have nothing to show for it, as a result of these conflicts, and the time to act is now,” he charged.
King Welentsi, on behalf of the others promised to collaborate with the council towards finding in a lasting peace in the region.
