Three activists of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tema East Constituency have declared their intentions to contest the parliamentary seat in the 2008 elections. They are Mr Ramseyer Agyeman Prempeh, Headmaster of Tema High School, Mr Daniel Titus-Glover, Industrial Relations Coordinator of GHACEM Limited and Mr Richster Amarh Amarfio, Executive Secretary of Corporate Social Responsibility Movement (CSRM) an environmental NGO. In separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency in Tema, the aspirants were optimistic of winning the seat because they had performed creditably in their various capacities as organizers and successful youth leaders and are qualified to become parliamentarians. Their visions include mobilization of the youth, opinion leaders and team work to undertake development projects in the communities. Mr Prempeh, who stood as an Independent candidate during the 2004 elections and got 11,000 votes, said he mobilized the youth in the constituency in 1992 for the party to win the seat. He commended President John Agyekum Kufuor for the good governance in the country and pledged to continue with the good policies of the party when elected. Mr Prempeh warned aspiring candidates against maligning others during electioneering campaigns because when defeated in the primaries, those maligned were the same people who would assist in marketing the winner for the parliamentary or presidential slot. He pointed out that with the constituency within an industrial area and in consultation with experts problems confronting the industries would be placed before parliament for redress. However, he said government should not be blamed for the collapse of most industries because its economic policies were geared towards promoting industrial growth. Mr Prempeh pledged that when he is elected, he would assist the Tema Municipal Assembly to decongest the industrial city to ensure free vehicular and pedestrian movements and byelaws would be enforced to bring sanity in the city. Mr Titus-Glover said he had contributed immensely towards the development of the Danquah-Busia Tradition in the Tema East constituency. "When elected, I would see myself as a servant and champion the voice of the constituents to address their problems. There should be a change in the constituency, " he added. Mr Titus-Glover pledged to work as a team with the chiefs, civil society and professionals with education of the youth as a priority, ensure workers were paid appropriate remuneration, Manhean Health Centre upgraded or a new hospital constructed to befit the town and a concrete wharf constructed at the seashore for fishermen. He said the people should be empowered economically and socially to enable them contribute to improve their living standards. Mr Amarfio said when elected he would collaborate with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and labour unions to seek redress of their problems in parliament. Source: GNA
