Power Minister, Kwabena Donkor, has directed the Electricity of Ghana (ECG) to interdict six top officials of the company following the fire destruction of 21,000 meters at a warehouse in Kumasi.
The fire at the abandoned warehouse also destroyed other electrical accessories during the rage.
These persons are the acting General Manager, Emmanuel T. Akanie, the Regional Commercial Manager, T. B. Boadu and the Asokwa District Manager, Yakubu Harrison.
The rest are the GEDAP II Repayment Project Manager, Kwadwoo Ayensu , the Materials and Transport Director Alhaji Alhassan Jango and the Project Accountant, Smauel Ofori.
In a statement, Dr Donkor says a committee of enquiry will also be set up next week to investigate the matter.
The Electricity Company of Ghana two weeks ago lost 21,000 metres worth $2million in a fire that razed a private warehouse housing the equipment intended for a project to replace metres in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.
Investigation by the fire service revealed that a power meter to the facility was completely burnt and another partially destroyed, indicating excessive electric current passed through. An electrical circuit breaker failed and got burnt.
Although ECG officials in the region say they suspect arson, the bigger question that is being raised is why the ECG decided to store the metres in an abandoned private warehouse when it has installations across the country.
Public Relations Officer of the Company Erastus Baidoo has however dismissed assertions that the warehouse is an abandoned one.
