The management of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Limited has apologised to the President, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, for the embarrassment caused by the behaviour and unguarded utterances of the unionised workers of TOR during the emergency meeting of the workers held on Tuesday, April 13.
A statement issued by TOR said management granted permission to the union executives to enable them to brief their members on the state of progress regarding decision taken at an earlier meeting with the Board of Directors in March 2010.
"Regrettably, the union leaders turned the meeting intended to update their members on efforts to solve TOR on sustainable basis, to be a news conference at which His Excellency the President and other personalities in government and private citizens including the Minister of Energy, Hon. Joe Oteng Adjei; Mr. Ato Ahwoi, and Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata were wrongly accused of having a hand in the current predicament of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Limited.
"The management of TOR unequivocably wishes to distance itself from the behavior and utterances of the workers that caused great embarrassment to government and certain personalities."
The statement said management considered the behaviour of the workers out of step with the company's rules of the behaviour and norms, "and we have accordingly, instituted a disciplinary procedure against the leadership of the union.
"We wish to confirm that the reason for the shutdown of the refinery was the inability of a supplier to deliver crude oil on schedule between the April 8 and 10. The supplier was unable to deliver because the vessel bringing the crude oil did not meet the required standards of Tema offshore mooring facility."
