The Public Relations Officer at the Education Ministry has blamed the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for the recent agitations by lecturers at the country’s technical universities.

Vincent Ekow Assifuah said, a recent meeting between the leadership of Technical Universities Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) and the NDC leadership including the party’s 2020 flagbearer, John Mahama, confirms the long-held suspicion that the opposition party orchestrated the agitations.

The NDC leader as part of activities to solicit input from organised groups to fine-tune the party’s manifesto towards election 2020, met with TUTAG members, led by its President, Dr Solomon Keelson.

Mr. Mahama, according to reports assured the members of TUTAG of the NDC’s commitment towards a comprehensive technical education and when given the mandate to govern the country in the next election.

The party intends to continue with the conversion of polytechnics to technical universities in addition to building six new technical universities for the newly created regions.

The former President reportedly condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for meddling in the affairs of university education in the country, describing how some Professors were demoted or downgraded in ranks as inhumane and affront to the dignity of the human resources of the technical universities.

Dr. Kilson thanked the flagbearer in particular and the NDC in general for recognising them as a worthy institution for their professional inputs as NDC prepares their manifesto.

TUTAG Mahama meeting

However, Ekow Assifuah in a WhatsApp post said, the meeting validates their suspicion that TUTAG embarked on the recent strike to please “their paymaster.”

“It is unfortunate and ungodly for TUTAG now finding solace in splinter groups with full-scale sponsorship from Former President Mahama to orchestrate agitations in the technical universities front…,” he claimed.

According to him, the National Labour Commission “sat on the matter and gave a ruling which enabled the TUTAG to call off their illegal strike.”

“TUTAG leadership is NDC and NDC is orchestrating agitations,” the PRO further alleged.
