Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have gathered outside a private property at Dzorwulu in the Ayawaso-West Wuogon of Accra over claims that election results were being manipulated in the building.
Late Saturday morning, hundreds of party supporters trouped to the premises, which houses an Israeli company that is reported to have been contracted by the Electoral Commission (EC) to aid in the transmission of election results.
According to the angry supporters led by NPP Deputy Communications Director Sammy Awuku, some EC officials had colluded with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to tamper with results there.
Not even the intervention of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is in Ghana leading an ECOWAS observer mission, could calm tempers as Sammy Awuku assured the crowd that the NPP is unaware of any contractual agreement between the EC and the company.
Joy News’s Gifty Ando-Appiah reported on the Election Headquarters that there is a substantial security presence in the area.
She said that heavily armed security personnel have also sealed off the premises from any unlawful intruders.
At one point, security personnel fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators.
Update: The premises has been confirmed to house a tech firm that the EC contracted to receive digital information about polling results from EC regional centers, process it, and send it to the EC headquarters.
The company is charged with ensuring that the information being sent is not tampered with along the way. Therefore, all information that passes through the company's system is encrypted; employees can neither interpret nor alter it.
Officials of both the NDC and NPP were eventually granted access to the premises and after observing operations there, they reported to their agitated constituents that nothing untoward was going on behind the company's doors.
