The Upper East Region on Saturday marked this Year’s World Water Day with a call on all stakeholders to ensure that water bodies are protected and preserved for the welfare of human beings and the environment.
The occasion was also used to appeal to the general public to use water judiciously since Government spent huge sums of money in water treatment.
Mr. Joseph Kojo Kankam, Administrator of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in-charge of the Region, who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the celebration of the World Water Day in Bolgatanga stated that, water was a very essential commodity to humankind and could not therefore be downplayed.
He indicated that misuse of water bodies could have serious health implications on people and hence the need for precautionary measures to be taken
to handle water with care.
He entreated consumers to pay their water bills to enable the Company to facilitate the supply of water.
He asked people who engaged in illegal connection of water to desist from such practices since the law would not hesitate to deal with them when found culpable.
The occasion was also used to organize radio talk shows on the theme of the World Water Day: “Sanitation”, visit of second cycle institutions to Water Treatment Plant Sites of the GWCL and clean-up exercises on the premises of the company and its environ.
