The United States Embassy in Accra says it will not confirm or deny the authenticity of the latest Wikileaks startling revelations about the country’s politicians.
The report contained in diplomatic cables leaked by whistle-blowing website Wikileaks has generated interesting comments from the main actors.
Government has however remained quiet on the content of the expose although some officials mentioned in the cables have justified their comments.
But the American Embassy says it is against its regulations to comment on such matters.
This was contained in a three-sentence email officials at the embassy sent to Joy News on Wednesday.
“We do not comment on the substance or authenticity of materials, including allegedly stolen classified documents, which may have been leaked,” Acting Public Affairs Officer Jeanne L. Clark said.
“The United States is a strong and long-standing ally of Ghana and our two countries share a firm commitment to democracy.
“We have tremendous respect for Ghana and its leadership in the promotion of democracy and human rights in the region and globally.
There are over one hundred diplomatic cables which reveal conversations between several government officials and the embassy since the 1990s.
The cables described some former officials in government as helpful allies whilst other had been tagged as stumbling blocks.
Experts have condemned such interactions
Deputy Education Minister Mahama Ayariga has justified comment he was cited to have made when he was presidential spokesperson.
Mr Ayariga is said to have told a US agent that Ghana’s Parliament was weak and the President Atta Mills’ communication team then was weak.
Although the embassy will not comment, the US government has condemned the release of the unfiltered and unedited cables saying it is dangerous.
