Vice President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Indian TATA Motors to work out modalities to ensure the use of natural gas for cheap public transportation in Ghana.
He said Ghana had discovered a significant quantity of oil and there was the need to make use of what would be accrued to support the public transport system in the urban areas of the country.
Mr Mahama stated this when a delegation of TATA Motors called on him at New Delhi to express their interest in Ghana’s gas industry.
"Currently, Metro Mass Transport is carrying out the public transport system in Ghana, but we are looking at a situation where your company will be able to supply buses that will be powered by gas as that is considered to be comparatively cheaper," he said.
The Vice President noted that there was the need to revive Bulk oil and Gas distribution in the country and that government would rely on TATA to support distribution companies to efficiently carry out those responsibilities.
Mr M.T. Wasan, Head of International Business Unit of TATA Motors, said his outfit was setting up a service plant in Tema to train Ghanaian technicians and also make their spare parts available for the transport industry in Ghana.
He took up the challenge to ensure the production and distribution of gas buses to Ghana to facilitate the haulage of gas and oil in the country in the coming months depending on when the government of Ghana would be ready to meet its side of the agreement.
"We have already visited Ghana and we shall be there again to ensure that we get everything right to act according to the demands of our customers in Ghana," he declared.
