There is a growing security concern in the Volta Region as residents make desperate demands on the police to up their game in order to enhance their safety in the Region.

Their call follows the latest killing at Alavanyo where an old woman in her late 60s was shot in the head by unknown assailants while on her way to fetch water on Saturday.  Residents say the cases have become too many and they are now living in fear.

Joy News Volta Region correspondent, Ivy Setordzi reports that prior to the old woman’s killing, a police constable was shot last Wednesday dawn when robbers attacked a pharmacy shop on the Ho central market road.

Residents are more terrified by reports that the seven alleged criminals who brook jail in Denu in the Ketu South Municipality are yet to be re-arrested by the police. There are also fears that informants who helped the police arrest these suspected criminals could be attacked.

When the Inspector General of Police visited Ketu South following the jailbreaking incident, the Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional area, Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti, complained bitterly about the police giving conflicting reports on the jailbreak saga and demanded to know the real situation on the ground.

Others suspect some crimes being committed in the area are done with the connivance of the police.

Some residents have also questioned the competence of the police in the region to prevent or resolve crime. They cited last year’s murder of late Nkwanta South DCE  Peter Keyenso, who was on his way from work, the stabbing of a 25 year old woman and her 5 year old son by unknown assailants at Laklevikope near Denu, as well as the murder of two Muslims in Aflao and complained that nothing has come of the police investigations into the above murders.

In their view, a joint police-military operation in the area would go a long way to clamp down on the activities of these criminals.

Meanwhile, police in the region are blaming the residents of not being forthcoming with information that could help deal with criminal cases.

Volta Regional Police Commander DCOP Peter King Gyinae said although the police have enough patrols on the ground, the robbers are often ahead of them, and called for reliable information from the public to deal with crime in the area.

He also cautioned residents against relaying information to any police personnel they meet on the streets, adding that his doors and those of his deputy and crime officer, are open to informants.
