Voters at the Ayawaso East constituency in the Greater Accra region have expressed concerns about sanitation and water situations in the area.
The voters say they want those issues addressed else they would be forced to withdraw their votes during the elections. Call it a threat, but they believe this is the only language politicians understand.
Ayawaso East constituency is located in the Accra Metropolitan area of the Greater Accra region. The constituency stretches from Nima, Maamobi, through Kanda and to some parts of Kotobabi. The Kanda portion of the constituency is mostly occupied by middle income earners while Nima and Maamobi are basically occupied by low income earners. There are about120, 000 in this constituency with Nima being the most populated.
The current biometric voter register pegged the number of eligible voters in the Ayawaso East Constituency at about 104,000. In 2008, the ruling NDC won the parliamentary seat with 57,000 votes while the NPP polled 47, 000. Sanitation is the major problem facing most areas in this constituency.
The sanitation problem is further compounded by absence of sanitation facilities in most homes. Residents dump refuse and defecate in drains instead of patronizing public places of convenience and facilities.
This leads to choked drains that flood the city anytime it rains. Residents say the major drain at Maamobi must be constructed as a storm drain to enhance flow of waste water and flood water in order to keep the community clean.
Another issue voters in this constituency have is the unavailability of water. Most residents journey long distances in search of water for daily chores. Residents, sometimes live without water for two weeks.
Others at Nima want the community to have a bigger social centre where social activities can be organized instead of holding such activities on streets which eventually inconvenience motorists.
The Ayawaso east constituency is a diverse constituency with every community within it having peculiar needs yet the basic social amenities that they want provided is necessary and crucial to the decision as to who to vote for or who not to vote for.
