US Soccer has named Abby Wambach female Athlete of the year alongside Jozy Altidor who grabbed the honour in the male category.
The honor is nothing new for Wambach, who collected a record sixth honor and surpassed USsoccer legend Mia Hamm – who has five – in the process. Wambach netted 11 international goals and provided six assists this year.
Record breaking
The 2012 Ballon d"Or winner also surpassed Hamm in the record books in 2013, breaking her all-time international scoring record of158 on June 20 and finishing the year with 163 goals in 212 career appearances for the US Women National Team.
Jozy Altodore's record setting year with the US national men team saw the 24 year old win his first honour after scoring eight goals in 2013 and three match winners in the World Cup qualifying matches.
Other winners
Other winners include PSG striker Lindsey Horan who took home Young Female Athlete ofthe Year honors. She scored two goals in four matches for the US U20 team this year and made her debutfor the senior team at the Algarve Cup in March.
US U20 national team midfielder Wil Trapp was honored as the 2013 Young Male Athleteof the Year. Trapp was instrumental in the US qualification for the 2013 FIFAU-20 World Cup, starting all five games in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship and being named to the tournament Best XI.
