The West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) has launched a 148-page book entitled “Election Management Practice Guide for West Africa”. The book seeks to manage and prevent electoral violence in the sub-region and on the continent at large.
Speaking at the book launch, the Chief of Sierra Leone’s Electoral Commission, Dr. Christiana Thorpe noted that managing peaceful elections in West Africa is like “meandering between the devil and the deep blue sea”.
She added that for elections to be peacefully managed “there should exist a strong and credible management body which is well resourced and whose independence is guaranteed to carry out its functions efficiently and effectively”.
Great attention she said should also be given to the youth and any grievances they may have should be addressed before the elections are held to prevent them from being used as perpetrators of crime.
The book noted that good planning before the elections is also critical in implementing the core and non-core electoral operational activities. It also stressed the need for effective collaboration with other commissions dealing with issues pertaining to democracy like political parties registration commission (PPRC), National Commission for Democracy (NCD) and the human rights commission (HRC) as it avoided duplication and conflict of roles and responsibilities.
The launch witnessed by representatives from Canada, Denmark, USA, Australia, Nigeria and ambassadors from Ethiopia, Benin, Switzerland and Sweden, with funding from the USAID and SIDA.
