Warning shots were fired to disperse residents of Adjei Kojo Wednesday when they resisted attempts by the Tema Development Corporation to remove their illegal structures from its land.
More than 50 structures were pulled down yesterday, and the exercise is continuing today amidst heavy police and military presence.
A Multi TV cameraman came under attack from a man said to be the leader of the TDC taskforce as he tried filming the exercise.
JoyNews’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo reported the structures were flattened as residents attempted to salvage some personal properties, including Television sets and freezers.
The demolition was done by the TDC taskforce under the supervision of armed military and police personnel.
According to Gakpo, a man suspected to be a national security operative got angry with residents who hooted at him when he attempted to seize a camera from a Multi TV camera journalist.
In his anger, he fired several warning shots into the air and into a parked car, shattering the windscreen.
Member of Parliament of the area, Irene Naa Toshie Addo, led some residents to protest against the demolition exercise before it started.
The demolition began shortly after the protest, Gakpo reported.
Some of the residents said they didn't have a wink of sleep last night, after Tuesday's demolition, fearing their houses will be next to be flattened.
One of them confirmed receiving notices to vacate the area but wondered how an institution-TDC- which collected money and authorised the building of the properties will now turn around to demolish them.
Another aggrieved resident claimed the matter was already in court and wondered why the TDC is demolishing the properties.
The TDC is however yet to make any official statement on the exercise.
