If you know anything about a bald eagle that was shot on or around Christmas Day, it could be worth $1,000 to you.
The Bird Emergency Aid and Kare Sanctuary (BEAKS) announced today they are seeking help finding out who shot the bird, a protected species, on Blount Island. It was discovered by fishermen on Dec. 30, and when the tide rose high enough the following day, was rescued and taken to BEAKS for rehabilitation.
The bird, still alive after being shot in the left wing, has been named "Bulletproof."
Its flesh was maggot-infested and its elbow was dislocated. Treatment including surgery repaired the damage, and Bulletproof continues recovering at BEAKS, set to begin flight therapy soon, according to spokesperson Cindy Mosling.
Penalties for shooting a bald eagle can be as high as $100,000 and could include up to a year in prison, Mosling indicated.
Anyone with information can anonymously call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Wildlife Alert Reward Program at 888-404-3922. In addition to a potential reward offered by the FWC, BEAKS is offering $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
