Among the dozens of people counting their losses after violent chieftaincy clashes in a suburb of Bolgatanga is a widow whose husband died 23 years ago.

Some houses and properties, including that of the widow, Vivian Adongo, were torched during the fierce two-hour gun battle at Atulbabisi in the Upper East Regional capital Saturday evening. Tens of people have been displaced.

Vivian returned to the house bequeathed to her by her late husband, only to find that everything had been burnt to ashes.

“Everything was condemned,” Vivian Adongo told Albert Sore, Joy News' Upper East Regional correspondent.

A dejected Vivian said she “will give everything to God”.

Another resident recounted the loss of his television set, bed, radio and several other belongings.

Police say the clashes on Saturday are related to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

Albert Sore recalled Atulbabisi as a hotspot since February when two royal gates started claiming ownership of the Bolgatanga skin.

Two persons, one from each of the gates are holding themselves out as chiefs, Albert reports.

The Upper East Regional Security Council has deployed military cum police officers to the area to prevent reprisals. The Council met Monday afternoon over the violent chieftaincy clashes.

Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Raymond Afeku told Joy News the team of police and military personnel will stay on the ground to prevent further clashes.

Albert attested that everything is calm in the area now with high-security presence.
