Mobile phones can play a crucial role in empowering women according to Senior Manager of Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, Georgina Fiagbenu.
According to her, many women, especially in deprived areas, own mobile phones thus can use it as a marketing tool to save their families from abject poverty.
Citing MTN mobile money as an example, Mrs. Fiagbenu indicated that, a lot of women can join the business which has seen high patronage since its inception in 2009.
According to the Bank of Ghana’s latest report on the mobile money sector, between July of 2015 and July 2016, registered mobile money subscribers increased from 10.4 million to 17.2 million, while active subscribers shot up to more than 5.3 million.
Mobile money has risen in value, volume and registered customers making it a service recorded to have a quantum increment in registered users across the country.
Based on this backdrop, Georgina Fiagbenu urged women to use the mobile phones to link up with the global economy.
Speaking at an event to mark International Women’s Day, she urged women to embrace digital innovation in order to boost efficiency.
“We need women to be bold, take giant steps and embrace technology because it is one thing that is bringing a lot of relief to women” she stated.
Irrespective of your educational background, Georgina Fiagbenu noted that every woman can use the mobile phone to make money to support her family.
“A lot of women can improve their lives with mobile money. Whether you are educated or not, if you know how to use a phone, you can do a lot of things” she stressed.
She added that activities of mobile money are seen as a way of moving the population into mainstream financial services thus women must take advantage of it.
