The Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs has ordered the parents of a 17-year-old girl who is being forced into marriage to stop their action.Joy News earlier reported that Muniratu Abdul Karim has been withdrawn from the Uthmania Junior High School to marry a 60-year-old Nigerian against her wish.Officials in the Kumasi branch of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) have began investigating the case following complaints lodged by Ms Muniratu’s teachers.Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs, Juliana Azumah Mensah, told Joy News that her outfit will ensure that Ms Muniratu goes back to school and that if this is resisted, the ministry will resort to the law court.“We will make sure that the child goes back to school and then if the parents insist, we’ll allow the law to take its course against them," she indicated. She bemoaned the fact that some girls in the country are forced into marriage even though they are still in school and called for an end to such practice.Mrs Azumah Mensah said she had made contact with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) over the matter and will be collaborating with the Police in order to find a legal solution.“In actual fact, three days ago, I did talk to Inspector Dassah; they are with DOVVSU. When it comes like this, we collaborate with the Police and then we see the legal aspect of it.“…the parents may think that is their child but then it goes against the rights of the child,” she said.Source: Joy News/Ghana
