Members of the Ejisu Municipal Assembly have voted overwhelmingly to endorse Mr. Kwaku Afrifah Yamoah-Ponko as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
At the assembly’s special meeting held at Ejisu on Friday, 65 out of the 67 members present voted for Mr. Yamoah-Ponko, a former Ashanti Regional Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), with two voting against him in an exercise supervised by the Electoral Commission.
When the former MCE, Mr. Ahmed Boakye, was fired, the President nominated Mr. Yamoah-Ponko for the MCE position and therefore it became the prerogative of the assembly members either to endorse or reject him.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, commended the members for endorsing the President’s nominee.
He reminded the members that the assembly work demanded sacrifice, commitment, love, unity and togetherness and therefore called on members to do things that would help bring development to the communities in the municipality.
The Presiding Member (PM) of the assembly, Mr. Nicholas Owusu Sekyere, on behalf of the assembly, gave an assurance that the assembly would work in unity with the new MCE to enhance effective and efficient running of the municipality.
Mr. Yamoah-Ponkoh, in a speech, thanked President Atta Mills for nominating him for the position.
He also commended the members for the confidence reposed in him and stressed that what they had done truly demonstrated that the members were prepared to work in unity.
Mr. Yamoah-Ponkoh said he would work in close collaboration with all the members, the staff, traditional authorities and the people to accelerate the development of the area.
He told them that his doors were always open to everybody, saying he would use his experience and expertise to impact positively on the municipality.
Among the dignitaries present at the function were the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Madam Animah Wilson; the Ashanti Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Sannie and the Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gideon Boako.
