Members of the Kojo Beedu Family of Winneba have planted 10,000 tree species along the banks of the Ntakrofa and Omeyi streams in the area to protect the water bodies.
Neenyi Kojo Beedu V, Chief of Beedu, a suburb of Winneba made this known on an inspection tour to see the planted trees.
He said some of the seedlings were supplied free of charge by the Winneba District Forest Service Division of the Forestry Commission while the rest were purchased by members of the family.
Neenyi Beedu stated that the aim of the project was to ensure a vegetation cover for the two streams, which pass through the family lands to prevent them from drying up.
He stressed the need for a forestation programme to provide conditions for the conservation of water bodies for the benefit of the people especially communities along the banks of streams and rivers.
Neenyi Beedu called on the people to protect and nurture the seedlings to maturity and warned cattle owners in the area to prevent their animals from destroying the trees.
The Chief Beedu cautioned people to desist from polluting rivers and streams and said that a taskforce had been formed to protect water bodies in the area.
Neenyi Beedu expressed support for the exercise by the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly to demolish structures blocking waterways to avoid a disaster.
