About 15 vehicles including two trucks crashed into each other in a near fatal motor accident on the George Walker Bush Motorway on Friday night.
The driver of a DAF truck with registration number GT 3747 J lost control of his vehicle when the brakes failed and rammed into a chain of salon cars on the Kwashieman-Mallam segment of the motorway.
No one died, but some drivers and passengers sustained various degrees of injuries.
The driver of the fully loaded DAF truck and another occupant immediately fled the accident scene to avoid being lynched.
The motor crash, which occurred in front of the Bank of Africa – in between the Hong Kong Junction and the Kwashieman Intersection – was the first of its kind involving such number of vehicles in one accident since the newly-constructed Millennium Challenge Account-funded motorway was inaugurated early this year.
Most of the drivers, whose vehicles were involved in the pile up looked bewildered and left stranded deep into the wee hours of Saturday morning waiting for the Joint Police-Military Highway Patrol team to arrive to asses the situation.
A heavy vehicular traffic built up all the way to the Lapaz end of the motorway for over five hours as oncoming vehicles had to make do with only one lane of the three-lane motorway at the accident scene.
