A road crash involving four vehicles at Ejisu-Besease in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday evening has claimed the life of one person with several others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
The accident occurred when an Accra-Bolgatanga bound bus crashed into the rear of an articulator truck which had to stop abruptly in the middle of the road to avoid running into two other stationary vehicles that had crashed few seconds earlier.
The deceased, identified only as Efo; is believed to be the assistant driver or ‘spare driver‘of the bus that run into the articulator truck.
The windscreen of the bus was completely mangled.
The unidentified driver of the bus is among several injured passengers who were rushed to the Ejisu and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals for treatment.
The earlier accident, involving a pick-up truck and a taxi cab, has been blamed for crash that claimed the life of the driver’s assistant.
According to eye-witnesses, the Accra bound pick-up truck with registration GW 8265 W attempted to overtake a vehicle but collided head-on with the taxi cab with registration GT 3523 S which was coming from the opposite direction.
Sensing danger, the articulator truck driver stopped to avoid crushing the two accident vehicles only to be hit at the rear by the bus.
One of the passengers onboard the bus, Kwaku Wiredu told Nhyira FM the driver and his assistant stopped at Nsawam to work on the brakes of the bus.
He said he suspects that the brakes of the bus were faulty.
The accident blocked traffic on the Kumasi-Accra road for several minutes.
A swift intervention by the Ghana Ambulance Service, Fire Service and Police saved the situation.
Ejisu District Commander of the Motor, Traffic and Transport Unit, ASP George Owusu Aboagye and personnel of the unit were on the scene to begin investigations into the accident as stranded passengers wait for another bus to continue the journey.
