Some 49 nine illegal Nigerian immigrants who were picked up in the Volta Region on Friday will soon be deported to their home country, says the Ghana Immigration Service.

Director of Public Affairs at the Immigration Service, Francis Palmdeti, told myjoyonline.com Monday, the illegal immigrants "are  in Aflao being prepared for removal".

The immigrants entered the country through unapproved routes using the various countries between Nigeria and Ghana.

Interestingly, they were travelling with almost all their belongings including mortars, pestles, utensils, beds, furniture and motorbikes among other things.

The immigrants, who included six men, 18 women and 24 children, were initially arrested on Friday at Bandai in two Benz buses heading to Chinderi in Volta-North.

A woman who was ini­tially part of the group is currently at the Bandai Clinic in the Krachi Nchumuru District where she is receiving care after going into labour before the deportation.

The immigrants, who claimed to be Fulanis from Oyo State in Nigeria, said they had come to settle in Ghana, precisely Chinderi to engage in cattle rearing.

Before they could settle at their destination, they were intercepted by police at Bandai and were imme­diately transferred to Ho, the Regional capital, at the request of the Regional Minister, Helen Adwoa Ntoso, for Immigration profiling and health screen­ing.

Their leader, who had a Nigerian Voter ID with name Atiku Alhaji Adams, told officials in Hausa that they were relocating to Chinderi to engage in cattle rearing but were aban­doned at the Dambai ferry site with their belongings by the articulator truck which conveyed them from Nigeria.

He disclosed that he had initially brought cattle to their location in Chinderi two years ago and was only relocating with his family to live and take care of the herd.
