Some 60, 350 National Service Personnel have been deployed across the country to serve in various sectors of the economy. The number falls short of the 80, 586 requests received by the Service secretariat from the various organizations in the country.
This was disclosed at a press briefing in Accra by the Director of the National Service Scheme [NSS], Vincent Kuagbenu.
Giving a breakdown of the requests received by the Scheme, Mr. kuagbenu noted that 19, 273 requests came from schools across the country with another 7,613 requests coming from other organizations.
The distribution of the service personnel however is as follows, 34, 015 personnel to serve in the education sector, 4, 518 posted to health institutions, 16,801 deployed to work in the Local Government and Ministries, Departments and Agencies with another 5, 016 been posted to the private sector.
These postings aside, the scheme is deploying some 519 personnel to the National Identification Authority [NIA] which is in the process of distributing national identification cards to those who registered.
115 Agriculture graduates have also been deployed to the National Service Farms while the Ministry of Agriculture will also receive 895 personnel to help with various projects.
A further 170 out of a total of 251 Service Personnel deployed to serve in the Tourism sector will work as District Tourism Officers.
6, 180 service personnel who have special health needs, are married or are lactating mothers however received special consideration from the NSS during the postings.
Mr. Kuagbenu also mentioned that the recruitment of voluntary personnel will take place immediately after the mandatory deployment. 5,000 volunteers are expected to be recruited to teach in deprived schools in the three northern regions, Volta, Brong Ahafo and parts of Western and Central regions.
As has become the norm, service personnel deployed for the 2011/12 service year will enjoy a 20 percent increase in their monthly allowances. This follows an increment in the daily minimum wage by government this year.
But the roll out of the new allowance at the start of the service year in October depends largely on a confirmation from the Finance Ministry which will have to approve the increase. Director of the National Service Scheme, Vincent Kuagbenu however says any outstanding allowance will be duly paid to personnel.
Graduates from 38 Colleges of Education which have now been given full tertiary status will be enrolled unto the Scheme from the 2012/2013 service year.
Following a 2002 – 2006 audit report which identified inadequate orientation of service staff, delays in the posting process, favoring of private organizations, public interference in postings and lack of proper monitoring among others, the NSS has over the past four years embarked on e-posting to minimize the delays.
Pre-service orientation on 75 accredited campuses have been done to smoothen the concerns raised over orientation whiles the Scheme is also in consultation with the Military High Command to re-introduce military training as a full complement of the national service program.
